Netflix’s Bridgerton takes inclusivity to the next level with the announcement of its fifth season being centred on a blossoming story between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling – a romance between two women in the conservative ton.
The plot was confirmed following the release of a teaser trailer on Tuesday, which showed the two standing side by side on a balcony and a pair of hands slowly touching in the end.
This is the first central queer romance representation of the hit period drama.
Grief, desire and a forbidden spark
Played by Hannah Dodd, Francesca will be the next sibling in the Bridgerton family to discover the true love that awaits her, this time as a widow.
Her initial story in Season 4 ends with the passing of her husband, John Stirling (Victor Alli), and the untold departure of John’s cousin, Michaela – portrayed by Masali Baduza.
Broken from the expectations of having a companion amidst the pain, Francesca’s season will be faced with challenges of navigating grief while searching for her true identity as a woman in society.
It takes a more compelling turn when she reconnects with Michaela.
Their reunion is just the beginning of an emotional tidal wave that fans will have to endure before a powerful and unconventional romance sets forth.
