What happens to gods after they die? That question sits at the heart of God of War: Laufey, the latest entry in Santa Monica Studio’s blockbuster franchise – and the first in the series’ history to place someone other than Kratos at the center of the story.

Enter Faye

Never fully seen in action but always looming over the story, Laufey the Just – better known as Faye (Deborah Ann Woll) – will finally step into the spotlight.

The Jötunn giant is Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, and will be the star of the upcoming adventure.

Revealed during PlayStation’s latest State of Play, the game follows the deceased frost giant through the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods go after death.

The story begins after the funeral pyre lit by Kratos at the opening of God of War (2018).

Rather than continuing the story after God of War Ragnarök (2022), Laufey unfolds alongside the events of God of War (2018) and Ragnarök, showing what Faye was experiencing in the afterlife while Kratos and Atreus were reshaping the fate of the Nine Realms.

A cube and a ribbon guardian

The previous games had Kratos fighting alongside his son, Atreus, and Freya, the Vanir goddess and former Valkyrie Queen, and even the severed head Mimir for guidance and lore.

This time, Faye will explore the mysterious afterlife with magical companions Phranque (voiced by Jack Quaid), a “cosmic cube” that serves as both guide and keeper of her sword, and Rue (voiced by Perlina Lau), a sentient ribbon guardian bound to the weapon’s hilt that can strike enemies from afar.

Myths collide in Everywhen

Mythology geeks will have a field day fighting through Everywhen, where gods, monsters, and mythical beings from different pantheons end up after death.

In the trailer, Faye was shown facing two different gods of war as early threats, the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and the Mongolian god Begtse.

On her journey, she will uncover the mysteries of the afterlife and find her way back home.

The reveal has also fueled fan speculation that the Everywhen could become a gathering place for gods Kratos has slain throughout the series, opening the door for familiar faces to return in unexpected ways.

A different kind of God of War

While Kratos built his reputation on brute force and overwhelming power, Faye appears to offer a faster, more acrobatic approach to combat.

Gameplay shown during the State of Play featured aerial combos, double jumps, soul-manipulating abilities, and a mystical Golden Hand that can be used for both attack and defense.

Combined with an entirely new setting and mythology-spanning cast of gods and monsters, God of War: Laufey looks poised to be one of the franchise’s biggest departures yet.

For a series long defined by Kratos’ rage and redemption, the next chapter appears ready to explore what comes after the final battle.

There is still no release date, but the game is already available on the wishlist on the PlayStation Store.
