Some worth millions: The most expensive football shirts ever sold

Some worth millions: Most expensive football shirts ever sold

Football is a sport that has fans worldwide – for many, it is not just something to watch to pass time, but their life.

Therefore, it is not much of a surprise that those hardcore fans make purchases to further “deepen their connection” with their favourite team.

Some buy little things like key chains or bottle openers; others spend their money on football match tickets or generic jerseys, and others spend thousands on specific jerseys from specific players.

Generic football shirts

Why are some football shirts cheap, and others cost millions?

Normally, the average price for generic football shirts is around £100, found in stadiums or sports shops.

However, there are shirts that are more expensive than that – a lot more expensive.

Sometimes, depending on the circumstances, a shirt can be auctioned off for thousands or even millions, and some hardcore fans or investors are happy to pay that.

Historical meaning

Why are they so expensive, you ask?

They commemorate specific, historic moments in important matches, and this is why they sell for so much money.

Some other big factors that drive the prices up are the players who wore the shirts, but also authenticity – originals worn by the specific player during that historic match are a lot more valuable than replicas, as they are unique and therefore worth millions.

The most expensive football shirts ever sold (in ascending order, approximate numbers):

Zinedine Zidane – World Cup Final (1998) – £30,000

Zidane scored two headers during this match and led France to their first World Cup title.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Man United debut (2003) – £39,000

This shirt symbolises the start of Ronaldo’s legendary career.

David Beckham – Champions League final (1999) – £40,000

Beckham played a pivotal role in this match during Manchester United’s late comeback against Bayern Munich.

Sir Geoff Hurst – World Cup final (1966) – £91,750

Sir Geoff Hurst scored an incredible hat-trick for England during this match against West Germany and won his country their only title to date.

Football players

Kylian Mbappé – World Cup final (2018) – £150,000

Mbappé became the youngest player to ever score a goal in a World Cup Final, and on top of that, he helped France win the trophy.

Pelé – World Cup final (1970) – £157,000

Back when Brazil was in their peak football era, Pelé was known for his extraordinary talent and skill level, making this shirt as valuable as it is.

Ronaldinho – El Clásico (2005) – £200,000

Ronaldinho wore this shirt during an unforgettable match where his fantastic performance not only earned him a standing ovation from his own fans, but even from the rival fans.

Andrés Iniesta – World Cup final (2010) – £250,000

During this match, Iniesta scored the winning goal, securing Spain their first-ever World Cup title.

Lionel Messi – El Clásico last-minute winner (2017) – £340,000

Messi, who played for Barcelona back then, scored the winning goal in the last seconds of this crucial match against Real Madrid. Coincidentally, it was also the 500th career goal for Barcelona.

Lionel Messi – World Cup final (2022) – £6.1 million

After Argentina’s historic win against France, this shirt became a very high-priced collectable, after ending the country’s 36-year World Cup drought.

Diego Maradona – World Cup quarter-final (1986) – £7.1 million

This shirt was worn by Maradona during this quarter-final match against England.

This game became memorable thanks to Maradona’s controversial ‘hand of god’ goal, but also his incredible effort, leading his country to victory.

And finally, as a little bonus, a mystery sale: Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt, which he wore during the 2008 Champions League Final when he scored the only goal and won his first Champions League title, was sold for a high sum too; however, the exact number is not known – it is only known that the price was in the six-figure range.
