Steve Burns is coming back – not to search for clues, but to talk to us.

More than two decades after he helped a generation of kids learn to ask questions, the former “Blue’s Clues” host is picking up where he left off. Only now, the clues are about life itself.

From clues to conversations

In 2002, Steve Burns had to leave the beloved children’s show to go to college.

Now, in 2025, he’s returning with a podcast – one meant not for pre-schoolers, but for the very people who once grew up watching him talk to animated saltshakers and search for paw prints on the wall.

The new podcast, called “Alive,” is set to launch this fall in collaboration with Lemonada Media.

According to Burns, this will be a continuation of the same journey, just with a different kind of mystery.

“It could basically be what we’ve always done,” Burns said in a recent video announcement.

“It used to be about shapes and colors and letters and numbers and vegetables and stuff. But now it could really be about death and sex and taxes and everything that makes it so weird and wonderful to be alive.”

A podcast that “listens back”

The 51-year-old former Nickelodeon host says that “Alive” is more than just a show.

It’s a way to reconnect.

“There are a thousand podcasts you can listen to,” he told Variety.

“This is one that listens back. I really want to continue what we started decades ago.”

“For us, it was all about curious investigation. It was about looking a little closer. About asking the right questions.”

“About following the clues that helped lead us toward greater understanding.”

And while the setting has changed, this time without his classic, green-striped shirt or talking furniture, Burns believes the mission is the same: to search, reflect and make sense of the world around us, together.

Leaving Blue’s Clues for higher education

Burns hosted Blue’s Clues from 1996 until his departure in 2002, when he was replaced by Donovan Patton’s “Joe.”

At the time, many young fans were left wondering why Steve was suddenly gone.

That question was gently answered in a viral 2021 video marking the show’s 25th anniversary, which was a moment that rekindled the bond between Steve and the now-grown viewers who once considered him a friend.

“I just kinda got up and went to college,” he said in the video.

“And that was really challenging by the way, but great because I got to use my mind and take a step at a time, and now I literally am doing many of the things that I wanted to do.”

He also took time to acknowledge how far his audience had come since then.

“Look at all you have done and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it’s just… it’s just so amazing, right? I mean, we started out with clues and now, it’s what? Student loans and jobs and families and some of that has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know.”

“I never forgot you. Ever,” he added. “And I’m super glad we’re still friends.”
