Canada is officially in early talks to join Eurovision, possibly as soon as next year’s contest, according to documents in Canada’s most recent budget.
Canada’s public broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organiser of the Eurovision Song Contest are currently holding talks to explore the possibility of Canada competing in the contest.
This was confirmed in Canada’s 2025 budget, which states that the government will support the CBC’s accession to the EBU, along with a funding increase of $150 million.
“We want Canadian culture on a global stage,” said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this month.
“Best culture in the world, best music in the world, I think Europe deserves to see it too”.
Question d’identité
Eurovision is far from the only thing Canada has been eyeing on the Old Continent, with rumours of applications for European Union membership floating about earlier this year.
US President Donald Trump’s trade war on Canada has left many Canadians, and its government alike, seeking stronger ties with old friends.
“This is about protecting our identity – yes, we want to protect our sovereignty,” said finance minister François-Philippe Champagne.
He also echoed Carney’s earlier remark, stating that “[we] also want to help people in the arts sector and in the film industry to make sure they can shine around the world. And we have a lot to offer as Canadians”.
With a history of both French and British colonisation, bilingual Canada remains a full member of the Commonwealth with King Charles III as its head of state.
Before taking up position as Prime Minister, Carney was the governor of the Bank of England.
He has gone on to say that Canada is “most European of the non-European countries”.

Non-European Song Contest?
The move to allow a country geographically outside of Europe is not unprecedented.
News of Canada’s potential participation in the contest comes a decade after Australia officially joined the contest in 2015.
Originally a one-off to celebrate the competition’s 60th anniversary, Australia has competed every year since.
Morocco also competed once in 1980 and remains the only African country to have done so, and Israel is the only Middle Eastern country currently participating.
Whether talks will be completed in time for the looming mid-December deadline to enter Eurovision’s 2026 contest is unknown.
