The race for the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship has taken a dramatic turn after the Qatar Grand Prix.

A risky call by McLaren opened the door for Max Verstappen to beat Oscar Piastri and keep his championship hopes alive.

The title fight is now wide open and all eyes turn to the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP.

Costly gamble by McLaren

Piastri set off from pole position, with McLaren hopeful of wrapping up the championship early.

Verstappen, starting third, moved up on the first lap to keep things interesting.

A crash between Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly then triggered the safety car on lap seven, presenting a perfect opportunity to pit.

However, while almost the entire field boxed, McLaren elected to keep Piastri and Lando Norris out.

That decision proved costly.

Under the special tyre rule enforced for the weekend, which mandated a 25-lap maximum per outing, a pit stop at lap seven would have effectively reset each driver for two more stints.

By staying out, McLaren locked themselves into a sub-optimal strategy.

Red Bull, in contrast, pitted Verstappen in what turned out to be a race-winning move.

Indeed, when Piastri crossed the line in second, Verstappen was nearly eight seconds ahead – sealing a huge victory and keeping his title quest alive.

Norris, meanwhile, finished fourth after a late pass to gain one position.

Three-way title fight awaits

Ahead of Abu Dhabi, the standings are tight: Norris leads with 408 points, Verstappen lies 12 behind, and Piastri is 16 off the lead.

The latter was visibly distraught after the Qatar blunder.

“I didn’t put a foot wrong,” he lamented before adding a blunt “just a shame” when asked if McLaren’s strategy robbed him of victory.

The championship fight is now a three-way battle involving Norris, Verstappen, and Piastri, with all three drivers on seven wins for the season.

Norris remains the favourite, but with so little separating them, the title could go down to the wire.

For McLaren, an opportunity to clinch a first drivers’ crown since Lewis Hamilton was turned into a gamble – one that ultimately backfired and handed the advantage back to their rivals.

For the fans, a final showdown in Abu Dhabi promises to be one of the most thrilling conclusions to a season in recent memory.
