Fantasy author George R.R. Martin ‘not in the mood’ to finish ‘The Winds of Winter’

‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ fans will have to wait some more time for the next installment of the book series, as American author George R. R. Martin revealed he is currently ‘not in the mood’ to write the next novel of the saga, ‘The Winds of Winter’.

The high fantasy saga inspired HBO’s hit series ‘Game of Thrones’, which aired between 2011 and 2019 and became a cultural phenomenon.

The latest book of the story, ‘A Dance With Dragons’, was published in 2011.

Since then, ‘Game of Thrones’ premiered and finished, and two more TV series based on Martin’s ‘universe’ have been produced, ‘House of the Dragon’, and, most recently, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.

Fans have eagerly been waiting for a continuation of the epic. Its author, though, does not seem to be much bothered to write it at the moment.

“I have to write more Dunk and Egg,” Martin explained to The Hollywood Reporter, referring to the short novellas he has been releasing for ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.

“There’s supposed to be another ‘Fire and Blood’ book, too. I do think if I can just get some of these other things off my back, I could finish ‘The Winds of Winter’ pretty soon,” he added.

“It’s been made clear to me that ‘Winds’ is the priority, but… I don’t know. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for that,” he said.

A clock that keeps ticking

According to Martin, two more books are coming to conclude ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.

After ‘The Winds of Winter’, the author is expected to release the final volume of the series, ‘A Dream of Spring’.

As of now, though, fans are still waiting to find out (spoiler!) if Jon Snow is still alive after being stabbed by his comrades of the Night’s Watch.

And although ‘Game of Thrones’ already gave an answer to that question years ago, Martin swears that his conclusion of the saga will be very different from the one provided by the show.

“I was going to kill more people. Not the ones they killed in the show. They made it more of a happy ending,” the author explained, referring to the highly controversial ending of the TV version of his story.

The writing process, however, has been rocky to say the least.

“I will open the last chapter I was working on and I’ll say, ‘Oh f—, this is not very good’. And I’ll go in and I’ll rewrite it,” he expressed.

“Or I’ll decide, ‘This Tyrion chapter is not coming along, let me write a Jon Snow chapter’. If I’m not interrupted though, what happens – at least in the past – is sooner or later, I do get into it,” he said.

Maybe there is still hope, after all.
