The 2026 adaptation of ‘Wuthering Heights’, directed by Emerald Fennell and starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, has arrived to sharply divided critical reactions.

While some reviewers praise the film’s ambition and emotional intensity, others argue that its bold stylistic choices undermine the spirit of Emily Brontë’s novel.

Praise for style and performances

Several critics have applauded the film’s visual craftsmanship and daring reinterpretation of the classic story.

Some early reactions described the film as provocative, sensual and stylistically confident, with strong chemistry between Robbie and Elordi helping to drive the emotional power of the narrative, as reported by Variety.

Supporters also argue that Fennell’s “loose” approach to the source material could help introduce the story to younger audiences, even if it departs from traditional adaptations.

Criticism over tone and faithfulness

At the same time, the film has faced harsh criticism from reviewers who believe the adaptation prioritises shock value over emotional depth.

Some critics described the film as overly sensational or melodramatic, arguing that its eroticised tone and stylised storytelling overshadow the novel’s psychological complexity.

Others felt that the performances were pushed toward exaggeration and that the film’s provocative elements sometimes bordered on parody rather than meaningful reinterpretation, as The Independent notes.

A film designed to polarise

Industry observers note that the divided response is not entirely surprising given Fennell’s reputation for provocative filmmaking.

The director’s previous works, including ‘Saltburn’, similarly split critics, and this adaptation appears to follow the same pattern – celebrated by some for its boldness and criticised by others for its excess.

As The Guardian argues, the film has been widely described as ambitious but controversial, with critics agreeing on one point: it is unlikely to leave audiences indifferent.

The debate continues

Despite the mixed reviews, anticipation remains strong, with early box-office projections suggesting the film could perform well commercially.

Whether audiences embrace Fennell’s daring interpretation or side with traditionalists who favour more faithful adaptations, the conversation surrounding Wuthering Heights demonstrates the enduring cultural power of Brontë’s story.
