Golf news: Teenager gains special PGA Tour status at CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Teenager Blades Brown secured unlimited sponsor exemptions for the rest of the PGA Tour season after finishing joint 14th at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday.

The 19-year-old shot a four-under-par 67 in the final round at TPC Craig Ranch to earn the exemption.

Brown, the son of WNBA veteran Rhonda Blades, turned professional after graduating from high school in January.

He is currently playing on the Kom Ferry Tour and is ranked 13th in the Tour points race.

The Nashville, Tennessee native needed a finish at least as high as 21st to earn a special temporary membership.

Brown finishes at 18 under

Brown made five birdies and one bogey to finish at 18-under 266 overall.

He was tied with Brooks Koepka and Taylor Moore, who shot 68 and 66 in the final round, respectively.

The teenager played alongside Scottie Scheffler and Kim Si-woo in the final group at The American Express in January and finished tied for 18th.

He could earn a PGA Tour card for next year with a top-20 finish on the Kom Ferry Tour,

Brown previously finished third in the Puerto Rico Open despite leading on the back nine.

Wyndham Clark wins the tournament with a 60

Wyndham Clark closed with an 11-under-par 60 to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Clark, the 2023 US Open champion, overtook Kim and pulled away from defending champion Scheffler to finish the four-round tournament at 30-under 254.

Clark’s ninth birdie matched Kim’s 60 from the second round.

Kim, the 30-year-old South Korean who started the final round with a two-stroke lead, shot 65 to finish 27 under.

The addition of bunkers and changes to the greens did not affect the American par-buster, who finished one shot off Scheffler’s winning score and 72-hole scoring record of 31-under 253 he set last year.

Scheffler settles for third

Scheffler signed off at 25 under after a final-round 65 and was briefly tied for the lead on Saturday but failed to catch Kim or Clark in the final round.

He was two shots behind Kim and Clark at the short par-4 sixth when his second shot hit the pin, bounced, and spun away, leaving him 54 feet away.

Scheffler settled for par on a hole that Kim and Clark birdied.

Jackson Suber came in a career-best fourth, shooting 63 to finish 23 under, while Keith Mitchell finished fifth after his 64 gave him a 22-under score.
