RM, member of boyband BTS, has called on the APEC leaders to invest in the arts and provide greater financial support to creators around the world to help them nurture their creativity.
In a speech in Goyang city, South Korea on Wednesday, RM — whose real name is Kim Nam-joon — described the leaders’ policies as the “canvas” and “playground” for the creators where they can freely express themselves and pour out all their creativity.
He said supporting creators would allow them “to let their creativity bloom” and help build a more vibrant, inclusive global cultural landscape.
“When creators flourish, other elements of culture gather to form brand new aesthetics.
“Their content will go beyond all kind of differences. They will blaze a road of true understanding and tolerance,” RM said.
K-pop breaks cultural barrier
RM emphasised how K-pop has become a bridge to connect people across the world.
He shared BTS’ early struggles to break into the Western music industry, recalling how difficult it once was for Korean songs to be heard in English-speaking countries.
“I saw how high a cultural barrier could be. At that time, the music of BTS was quickly called non-English; a foreign culture.”
RM also shared that, in their early days, people would often ask whether they were from North or South Korea instead of asking about their music.
“That was the reality,” he said.
Despite those challenges, he said K-pop has thrived – not just because of its distinctive sound, but because of its inclusivity and ability to unite people from different backgrounds.
“K-pop’s success came from respect and diversity, from embracing world cultures while holding onto Korea’s unique identity,” RM added.

Push for diversity through culture and creativity
The BTS member also said he shares APEC’s vision of promoting diversity, inclusion, and growth through culture and creativity.
“As an artist, I promise to let my imagination fill the canvas that you create.
“I will play my heart out in the playground that you build for us,” RM said.
“I will do my part by sending messages of courage, hope, and emotion through music.
“Messages that embrace our differences to make something better together.”
He urged APEC leaders to continue supporting artists and creators, saying their backing can help creativity flourish and allow new works to “resonate around the world.”
