South Korea’s four biggest K-pop agencies have confirmed plans to establish ‘Fanomenon’ as a global music festival to showcase their artists.
The four agencies – Hybe, YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment – announced on April 16 that they are “preparing to set up a corporation to advance a ‘Fanomenon’ event”, according to a report by The Korea Times.
The large-scale festival is aimed at showcasing Korean popular culture to a global audience, with the news outlet predicting that it could rival Coachella.
JYP founder Park Jin-young, the Presidential Committee for Popular Culture Exchange’s co-chair, introduced the ‘Fanomenon’ initiative in October at the committee’s inauguration ceremony in Seoul, explaining that the name combines the words ‘fan’ and ‘phenomenon’.
At its launch in October, Park said the goal was to create a recurring mega-festival that would start in South Korea and eventually tour cities worldwide, with the aim of rivalling leading international music festivals.
Growing K-pop’s global visibility
Under Park’s vision, the festival could begin as early as 2027 in South Korea, followed by overseas editions from 2028, featuring a broad line-up involving K-pop and other elements of Korean popular culture.
The agencies described the joint venture as a “model for collaboration designed to explore new possibilities for Korean culture’s expansion, including K-pop, in global markets”.
They added that procedures to establish the corporate body are currently under way but emphasised that no concrete business plans, schedules or operating structures have been finalised.
“The companies will make cautious decisions after taking market conditions and diverse opinions into account,” the group stated.
The discussions come amid a broader push by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to promote the K-pop industry after assigning Park to spearhead those efforts, pledging strong government support while staying out of artistic decisions.
