Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Festival brings in $20m for women, girls

Olivia Rodrigo’s debut festival, Daisy Chain Fields, has raised US$20 million for nonprofits supporting women and girls.

The Saturday, August 29 festival initially raised $10 million before American philanthropist Melinda French Gates committed another $10 million.

Rodrigo headlined the successful festival this week along with other big names in the music scene, such as Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, Garbage, Eli, Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, Devon Agai, Not For Radio and Santigold.

French Gates doubles festival donations

On Saturday night, the “the cure” singer expressed her gratitude to all the artists who participated in the festival.

“The fact that they took the time out of their insanely busy schedules to come and do this festival for free is something I’m so grateful for.

“Because of that, and because of all of you who came to hang out today, I can stand on the stage and say we are donating $10 million to 10 incredible charities,” she said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

“I really believe that giving women the tools to decide their own futures and live healthy lives free of violence and discrimination is the most effective tool we have at changing the world for the better.”

Rodrigo also announced French Gates’ commitment to double the donations. 

“And I don’t know many people who represent that idea more than Melinda French Gates. Melinda is one of the most inspiring women I’ve ever met. She’s devoted her life to empowering women and girls that might have otherwise been forgotten,” she added.

“She’s generous and brave and has done so much good in this world, and I’m totally floored because as well as being in attendance here tonight, she’s pledged to double every dollar that we made here today to a grand total of funds being donated to $20 million. I’m so grateful!”

10 nonprofits, one big mission

The organisations that would benefit from the Daisy Chain Fields festival are Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeForm, Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Women’s Law Center and Planned Parenthood.

The $20 million will be given equally to these non-profits, which aid women and girls both in the US and around the world.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Melinda and Pivotal for believing in this mission and making the impact of our first festival twice as powerful.

“Most of all, I’m so excited about what this means for the incredible organisations we’re supporting and the women, girls and communities they show up for every single day,” Rodrigo said.

She had previously slammed United States President Donald Trump for defunding Planned Parenthood health centres. 

Meanwhile, French Gates praised the “drop dead” singer and her humanitarian efforts on stage during the festival. 

“Olivia Rodrigo is a force,” she said, as quoted by Variety. 

“What Daisy Chain Fields sets in motion will last far beyond a single night, by opening up opportunity for women and girls around the world and showing a new generation how much their voices matter. I’m so proud to support Olivia’s vision.”

Music legends join Rodrigo

Another memorable moment in Rodrigo’s widely praised festival was her surprise performances with guests such as Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette.

The 23-year-old singer performed “Building a Mystery” with Sarah McLachlan.

They then paid tribute to Dolly Parton by performing McLachlan’s hit song “Angel”, before displaying Parton’s picture on the screen with the words, “We Will Always Love You, Dolly.”

Rodrigo also sang Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” with Stevie Nicks.

“Daisy Chain Fields is about what can happen when we come together and use our collective power to support one another,” the “stupid song” singer said.
