The Golden Globes inaugurated 2026’s award season on Sunday night – with a few surprises.

The ceremony was hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who came back for the second year in a row after presenting 2025’s event.

“Just like Wicked, I’m back for a sequel,” she said.

“Just like Frankenstein, I’ve been pieced together by an unlicensed European surgeon. And just like the podcasters nominated tonight, I should not be allowed to be this close to Julia Roberts,” she joked.

Speaking to an audience packed with celebrities, the comedian said: “There are so many A-listers here, and by A-listers I mean people who are on a list that has been heavily redacted.”

“The Golden Globe for best editing goes to the Justice Department,” she teased, referring to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s redacted files.

‘Hamnet’ wins big

Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ won the prize for Best Film – Drama.

The movie, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s book of the same name and recounting the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway as they deal with the death of their son Hamnet, also took home the award for Best Actress – Drama for Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who plays Hathaway.

Her co-star, Irish actor Paul Mescal, was nominated in the Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category. He lost the award to Swedish legend Stellan Skarsgard, who won for ‘Sentimental Value’.

Accepting the prize, Buckley praised her colleagues, saying: “This was such an extraordinary set to be a part of, telling the story of probably the most famous Brit who ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish and a mostly Polish crew.”

‘One Battle After Another’ doesn’t disappoint

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest venture, ‘One Battle After Another’, won the Golden Globe for Best Film – Musical or Comedy, with the American director also bringing home the prize for Best Director.

But while singer-turned-actress Teyana Taylor bagged the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, the film’s main star, Leonardo DiCaprio, failed to win his award for the night.

The honour was given to Timothée Chalamet, who won the prize for the ping-pong escapade ‘Marty Supreme’.

‘The Secret Agent’ wins Best Non-English Language Film award

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s ‘The Secret Agent’, starring ‘Narcos’ actor Wagner Moura, brought home the Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Film.

Moura’s performance was also recognised with a win in the Best Actor – Drama category.

He is the first Brazilian actor to ever win a Golden Globe in the category.

“‘The Secret Agent’ is a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma,” the actor shared in his acceptance speech.

“I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones that are sticking with their values in difficult moments,” he added.

Lastly, in the TV categories, medical drama ‘The Pitt’ won the Golden Globe for Best Series – Drama, while Apple TV’s ‘The Studio’ triumphed in the Comedy or Musical category.

‘Adolescence’ also continued its prize sweep, with English actor Stephen Graham winning the award for Best Actor in a Limited Series, and the show bagging the prize for Best Limited Series.

Rhea Seehorn for ‘Pluribus’, and Noah Wyle for ‘The Pitt’ were both victorious as well, while Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams also won their Golden Globes for ‘The Studio’ and ‘Dying for Sex’, respectively.
