Meralco Bolts will head into the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup with a new import after deciding to part ways with Ismael Romero following an off-court incident overseas.
Instead, Meralco will bring in 7-foot American reinforcement Marvin Jones, who is expected to arrive in the country on March 2 to prepare for the mid-season conference.
Team manager Paolo Trillo said the franchise decided not to retain Romero after his physical altercation with former PBA player Nick Demusis during the 35th Dubai International Basketball Championship.
“We just felt that this time is the best for him and for us not to line him up and not to field him in this conference with regards to the issue and game he had overseas,” Trillo said on the Power & Play program hosted by former commissioner Noli Eala, as quoted by Spin.ph.
“We’re looking for another import that we’ve come to terms with already. We’ll be fielding in Marvin Jones,” he added.
Romero was initially tapped to reinforce the Bolts during the EASL season and was expected to stay on for the Commissioner’s Cup, which has no height limit for imports.
Meralco opens its campaign on March 18 against Converge FiberXers at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
