TV network Peacock released on Friday the trailer for “The Paper”, a spin-off of the beloved Emmy-winning series “The Office”, co-created, written and produced by Greg Daniels (“The Office”) and Michael Koman (“Nathan for You”).
“Several years ago, a documentary filmed the story of Dunder Mifflin. Now, they’ve found a new subject,” the trailer narrates, referencing the Scranton-based company that is the subject of “The Office”.
The brand-new mockumentary series follows the Toledo Truth Teller, a historic Midwestern daily that’s now neglected by its owner, who also sells toilet paper and toilet seat covers.
“Enervate sells products made out of paper: toilet tissue, toilet seat protectors and local newspapers, and that is in order of quality,” a character describes.
“A new comedy of underdogs with major issues”
The show focuses on Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), the Toledo Truth Teller’s new editor-in-chief brought in to try to revive the paper to its glory days. However, he will have his work cut out for him.
“Have you read this paper? How do you think it compares to any other paper?” Ned was asked.
“It sucks,” he admitted. “But we are going to make it better.”
Cue Ned briefing a rag-tag group of volunteer reporters from the paper’s current non-editorial staff, with him asking if they have “actually written for a paper before.”
Much to his dismay, most have no editorial experience, with others’ writing experience being limited to “tweeting” and “being in a group text.”
Despite this, Ned is confident that they can revive the struggling newspaper.
“Seven highly motivated, tenacious Buckeyes are out there hunting for news. You’d be a fool to bet against that,” he says.
The trailer concludes with the appearance of a familiar face: Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez).
“Not again,” he grumbled. “I’m not agreeing to any of this.
