‘Pudding mit Gabel’ is the sweetest new way for Gen Z to hang out

Pudding mit Gabel, or ‘Pudding with a fork’, is the latest viral trend which sees Gen Z come together in public parks to eat traditional pudding in an unconventional manner: with a fork.

What is Pudding mit Gabel?

Pudding mit Gabel is quite ritualistic: young people gather in a park with their dessert pots and forks to sit in a circle, a countdown is then started as they bang the pot lids with said fork before tucking into the pudding.

This strange phenomenon started in August 2025 in the German city of Karlsruhe, with a single flyer advertising the event which went viral on social media.

The ritual also sprung up in several other German cities; Hannover’s Pudding mit Gabel at the end of September saw over 1,000 attendees dig in with their forks.

The trend then spread across Europe, with London parks recently playing host to several editions of Pudding mit Gabel.

The proof is in the pudding

Pudding mit Gabel is being described as a way for young people to easily – and inexpensively – connect offline.

With rates of reported loneliness amongst Gen Z at record highs, it may be no wonder that the most digitally connected generation is seeking more offline socialisation.

“We just wanted to socialise” says student Hope Lewthwaite at a Pudding mit Gabel event in London.

The cost-of-living crisis, which has gripped most of Europe, plays a role as well.

“It is a nice third space, which we don’t have any of anymore”, adds Lewthwaite.

“You can meet people without having to actually put a lot of money into it”.

Gen Z’s rather strange humour, often summed up by ‘randomness’, is also seemingly what makes it so popular.

Mehran Nadimi, who runs the popular karlsruhe.memes Instagram page which made the event viral in the first place, says he found the idea of Pudding mit Gabel “charming and funny”, and so decided to post about it.

“It’s cheerful, absurd, laughable” explains media scholar Christian Möller.

“In today’s world full of problems, fears and frustration, this is a genuinely fun event full of light-heartedness”.

“Pudding connects people” sums up Nadimi in the caption of an Instagram post about this delightfully odd trend.
