Tensions between Israel and the United Nations have intensified following a controversial raid by Israeli forces on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) headquarters in East Jerusalem on December 8, 2025.
The raid, which resulted in the removal of the UN flag from the premises, has sparked widespread condemnation from international leaders and organisations.
Raid on UNRWA Headquarters
On December 8, Israeli forces stormed the UNRWA office in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, removing the UN flag and forcibly entering the building.
The UNRWA provides critical humanitarian services to Palestinian refugees, including food, education, and healthcare.
The Israeli military did not initially provide a clear justification for the raid.
However, it is widely seen as part of the ongoing tensions in Jerusalem and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The raid has sparked significant backlash from the international community.
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned the action, stressing that UN personnel and facilities must be respected and protected under international law.
“This compound remains United Nations premises and is inviolable and immune from any other form of interference,” the Secretary-General said.

International reactions
The incident has drawn swift responses from multiple international bodies.
The European Union expressed concern over the escalating situation, calling for a de-escalation of hostilities and respect for international treaties regarding the protection of UN staff and premises.
“Such actions set a dangerous precedent for blanket disregard of international law, including the Geneva Conventions, which grant legal protection for organizations ensuring vital functions in line with international humanitarian law,” according to a statement.
Palestinian authorities have also condemned the raid as an act of aggression against the UN and its mission in Palestine.
A spokesperson for the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Israel of trying to undermine the humanitarian work being carried out by the UNRWA.
Human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have expressed alarm over the raid, describing it as part of a broader pattern of actions by Israel that undermine Palestinian rights and international law.
Flag significance
The removal of the UN flag is particularly symbolic, as the flag represents the international community’s commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees and promoting peace in the region.
This act has sparked concern that the situation could escalate further, with potential impacts on both the humanitarian response to the ongoing refugee crisis and the broader peace process.
As the situation evolves, diplomatic efforts will likely continue to address the mounting tensions and restore respect for international institutions in the region.
