The road to success isn’t easy, as they say. There are challenges to face that get you to the top. That’s the experience of Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala, as she earns her first WTA 500 championship.
Eala managed to get past legendary and top-seeded players from around the world to win her first WTA 500 title at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in Washington.
After a rain-delayed final on Monday, World No. 28 Eala and World No. 3 Jessica Pegula of the United States resumed their much-awaited battle on Tuesday morning (Philippine time), where the left-handed Filipina made history with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Pegula, making her the first Filipina and Southeast Asian to win a WTA 500 tournament and capturing the first WTA title of her career.
But her title run was far from easy, as she had to overcome more experienced and higher-seeded opponents to claim her breakthrough WTA 500 crown.
How Eala made history
The 21-year-old opened her campaign by battling one of the tournament’s toughest opponents, 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Zheng Qinwen of China
During their match, Zheng ruled the first set, but Eala did not falter. Instead, she made a comeback in the second set to finally defeat Zheng, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, earning her a spot in the round of 16, where she battled defending Mubadala DC Open champion and Filipino-Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez.
Eala overcame a formidable challenge from Fernandez, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in straight sets to book her place in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals didn’t seem easy for Eala either, as she battled World No. 10 and reigning 2026 Italian Open WTA 1000 champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
But Eala fought hard, and her grit and determination allowed her to overcome her opponent, 6-3, 6-4, to book her place in the semifinals.
In the semis, the Filipina faced another Asian opponent, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.
Eala won in straight sets against Osaka, 6-4, 6-2, which earned her first place in a hard court final.
Earning a place in the final was already huge for Eala, but she wasn’t done yet as she delivered the biggest performance of her career, besting Pegula and becoming the first Filipino to win a WTA singles crown.

Eala thanks family, team, and Filipino fans
After the match, Eala did not focus on herself in her match-winning speech but instead poured out her gratitude to her family, team, and supporters, and even congratulated Pegula for an outstanding week and season.
“It’s always a pleasure to share the court with you. I definitely learned so, so much,” she said, talking to Pegula. “I’m really looking forward to hopefully many more finals with you.”
She also thanked her parents, brother, and members of her team, especially her coach, Joan Bosch, from the Rafa Nadal Academy.
Eala also credited the Filipino supporters who watched her throughout her journey, describing them as the people who gave her a home-court advantage during the match.
“Thank you very, very, very much, my fellow Filipinos,” she said. “I really feel all the love.”

Tributes pour in for Eala’s historic triumph
After the historic victory, many personalities paid tribute to Eala.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated Eala on social media, hailing her historic victory.
“You continue to redefine what is possible for Philippine tennis and inspire countless young Filipinos to dream without limits,” Marcos said.
“Kasama mo ang sambayanang Pilipino sa pagdiriwang ng panibagong tagumpay na ito (The whole Filipino community is celebrating with you in this new victory),” he added.
Tennis legend Rafael Nadal also congratulated Eala on her triumph.
“What an incredible week in Washington! A well-deserved trophy for all the hard work,” he said.
Eala has been training at the Rafa Nadal Academy since she was 13 years old and graduated in 2023.
Fellow athlete EJ Obiena also applauded the tennis star and even shared highlights of her win on his Instagram Stories.
Another tennis legend, Boris Becker, hailed Eala for the history she made.
As Alexandra Eala finally brought home her first WTA 500 crown, her determination became stronger than ever to capture more victories, not just for herself but for the whole country.
