Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez are set to reunite as the lead voice stars of Illumination’s upcoming animated film “Not Alone,” their first project together since appearing in the 2019 romantic comedy “A Rainy Day in New York”.
Illumination announced the project during the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, revealing Chalamet and Gomez as the stars of the original science-fiction adventure, which is scheduled for release in April 2027.
According to news outlet Variety, Chalamet, a multi-time Oscar nominee known for “Call Me by Your Name” and “Marty Supreme,” will voice Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic who prefers spending time alone.
Meanwhile Gomez, a singer and Golden Globe-nominated actress and producer of “Only Murders in the Building,” will portray Fran, an astro-botanist developing the world’s first-ever plant-powered rocket.
The film’s voice cast will also include Brett Goldstein, Allison Janney, Lamorne Morris, Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou.
Inside the world of ‘Not Alone’
According to the film’s synopsis shared by Variety, “Not Alone” follows the story of Joe and Fran as they prepare for the inaugural launch of a revolutionary plant-powered rocket.
The pair has already developed feelings for each other, but neither of them is particularly skilled at romance, leading to a series of awkward interactions as they work together on the rocket.
Their lives become even more complicated when they meet three fugitive aliens — Dunk, Welly and Shirm — who take refuge in Joe’s home while fleeing Zandro, a determined but inept interplanetary law officer.
Believing that the experimental rocket could be their ticket back home, the trio turns to Joe and Fran for help, drawing the pair into an intergalactic adventure that tests their growing relationship.
“Not Alone” will be directed and produced by Illumination, the studio behind hit franchises such as “Despicable Me” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
It will be co-directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan Del Val, all longtime collaborators of the studio.

Fans excited for the animated film
The announcement of “Not Alone” has already generated buzz across different social media platforms.
One user on X, formerly Twitter, said they were already looking forward to the film’s first trailer, writing: “I am seated. Can’t wait for the trailer to come.”
On Reddit, some fans noted Illumination’s history of box-office success, saying the studio’s reputation could help generate interest in the original science-fiction adventure.
Meanwhile, fans on Instagram shared how they were excited to see Chalamet and Gomez reunite on screen, with some praising the studio’s early promotion of the film.
“They surely know how to get the audience’s attention ahead of the first trailer,” one user wrote.
