You don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy “Off Campus” – a new eight-episode series mixing intense ice hockey scenes and off-the-ice romantic elements.
The worldwide interest in hockey romance has grown bigger since the TV adaptation announcement of Elle Kenned’s best-selling novels.
Proving this point, the successful debut of the series on Prime Video on May 13 has marked the genre as one of the most in-demand themes in entertainment for its overwhelming fanbase and online trends.
It had various social media platforms filled with creative fan edits and even sparked discussions about how the sweet blend of hockey and romance brings a distinct flair to the story.
When romance and sports collide on ice
“Off Campus” is set at Briar University, where emotional college drama and adrenaline-pumping hockey matches intertwine.
Its first season kicks off with a “mutually beneficial deal” between Garett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) – the latter being the tutor and the former being the fake boyfriend to make your crush notice you.
But putting the clichéd main plot to the side, the series has done an exceptional job of presenting steamy romance while at the height of emotional vulnerability.
How it approached the pair’s personal traumas expounded in its book version, “The Deal”, not only brought healing to the characters but also became a channel of awareness to those who can relate to the struggles of Garett and Hannah.
The cast of the TV adaptation was commended by critics and viewers alike for their shared chemistry that gave life to the found-family dynamics among the hockey team.

Delivering what the fans want: Season 2
According to The Express Tribune, “Off Campus” swiftly dethroned satirical superhero drama “The Boys” as the most-watched Prime Video series just a day after its premiere and four days before the latter’s Season 5 finale.
What got fans even more excited was the streaming service’s decision to renew the series for Season 2 ahead of the first instalment’s small-screen debut.
Amazon’s head of global television, Peter Friedlander, recounted the undeniable support the show has been receiving since its release, saying: “With its passionate fan base [and] rich source material, we knew this series had the depth and momentum to continue beyond its first season.”
Production is yet to take off, but the upcoming season is anticipated to centre on John Logan (Antonio Cipriano), Garett’s best friend and the team’s right winger, whose story is adapted from the second book in Kennedy’s series, “The Mistake”.
Playing his love interest is British actress India Fowler as Grace Ivers, whose casting was confirmed in early May.
‘Hockey love’ domination on screens and bookshelves
Having hockey romance as their common denominator, “Off Campus” now sits at the same table as “Heated Rivalry” for their grave contributions to the genre’s rapid rise in mainstream pop culture.
BookTok, a subcommunity on TikTok for book and literature lovers, and other romance communities have played crucial roles in giving sports romance novels the push they need to land on the in-demand list in recent years.
There is no denying that hockey romance’s prominence in this category was due to the coexistence of fast-paced competition and emotional depth, allowing readers and viewers to immerse themselves in stories that have both an exciting and personal touch.
