TV news: Three dragons fans are yet to see in House of the Dragon

Cultures from around the world have been worshipping winged serpents known as dragons independently for thousands of years before modernity.

Scholars have also been debating for centuries whether dragons were real beasts that once terrorised the world, or merely a metaphor for a power too dangerous for humans to tame.

This must have been one of the inspirations of American novelist George RR Martin when he wrote Fire Blood, now adapted on television as HBO’s “House of the Dragon”.

Dragons are fire made flesh, and they took a central role in bringing the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros to heel.

Following the impressive premiere episode of “The House of the Dragon” Season 3, let’s take a look at the top three dragons that are yet to make an appearance in the series.

3. Tyraxes

Bound to Prince Joffrey Velaryon, Tyraxes was a young but strong dragon, noted to be significantly growing every year.

One of the major plotlines of Season 1 of “The House of the Drago”n is the rumour about the paternity of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s children with Ser Laenor Velaryon.

Joffrey, along with his brothers Jacearys and Lucerys, was suspected of being a bastard of Ser Harwin Strong, making them illegitimate heirs to the Iron Throne.

Rhaenyra then moved to put dragon eggs in her children’s cradles to silence the doubters. This proved to be a boon as each of the dragon’s eggs hatched, instantly bonding them with the children.

However, the rumours persisted as the Velaryon kids grew up with prominent black hair instead of the trademark silver-haired Targaryen look.

George RR Martin’s The World of Ice and Fire described Tyraxes as “a pale violet dragon with dark purple horn[s] with purple flames.”

2. Grey Ghost

One of the three wild dragons of Dragonstone, Grey Ghost’s reputation was rightly matched by his name.

Grey Ghost was renowned for his elusiveness and ability to hide behind clouds and mist. The smallfolk of the island rarely catch a glimpse of this extremely shy dragon.

Unlike the wild Sheepstealer that feeds on, well, sheep, Grey Ghost’s favorite meal is fish, as he is sometimes seen snatching prey in the waters when flying the Narrow Sea.

So far, only Sheepstealer has made an appearance in the show. In the books, Alyn of Hull tried to claim Grey Ghost during the Red Sowing but ultimately failed.

1. The Cannibal

Out of the three wild dragons, alongside Sheepstealer and Grey Ghost, the dragon named Cannibal was probably the most interesting.

If you will notice, each of the wild dragons is named after their behavior and diet. The Cannibal earned his name by attacking and eating other smaller dragons on the island.

The Cannibal is described as the largest and oldest of the three, with scales as dark as coal and menacing green eyes.

In the books, sources are conflicted about the origin of this eerie dragon. Some locals believe that The Cannibal has been living in Dragonstone even before the arrival of the Targaryens.

This claim would make this dragon older than Vhagar. However, scholars such as Grand Maester Munkun and Septon Eustace doubt the veracity of this claim.

Another counterpoint to this explanation is that Aegon I Targaryen would have hunted The Cannibal atop Balerion the Black Dread if it had shown aggressiveness. Yet his presence on the island suggests that the Conqueror himself is unbothered by the Cannibal.

Despite the improbability of this claim, the Cannibal being born from a different lineage of dragons would explain its antagonism toward the Targaryen dragons.

The Cannibal would be an interesting flavor to the show’s plotline, proving that dragonpower is not an exclusive divine right bestowed on the Targaryens.
