George Russell celebrated an emotional return to the top of the podium after converting pole position into a commanding victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, giving Mercedes a timely boost in its Formula One title campaign.

Russell controlled the race from lights out at the Red Bull Ring, keeping relentless pressure from reigning world champion Max Verstappen at bay to secure his second win of the 2026 season.

The Briton crossed the finish line 1.6 seconds ahead of Verstappen, while Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third.

“Great to be back,” Russell wrote in an Instagram caption after the race, sharing photos that praised the team’s flawless execution and highlighted the significant progress Mercedes had made.

The result marked another statement performance from the Silver Arrows after a challenging run of races, with the team maximising both pace and strategy in Spielberg.

Meanwhile, team principal Toto Wolff credited the victory to Mercedes’ improved car balance and disciplined race management, while admitting Antonelli’s hopes of fighting for the win faded after losing valuable track position during the pit-stop phase.

Despite that setback, the 19-year-old recovered impressively to secure third place and valuable championship points.

Verstappen, racing at Red Bull’s home circuit, mounted a late charge but was unable to close the gap to Russell in the closing laps. Nevertheless, the Dutchman’s second-place finish underlined Red Bull’s improved race pace and ensured a hard-fought podium in front of the home crowd.

‘Tough couple of months’

For Russell, the triumph was more than just another victory. He said that it re-affirmed Mercedes’ credentials as a genuine title contender under the new regulations.

“It’s been a tough couple of months with some really tricky races, with races that felt like everything was going against me, then some races with some tough performances,” he told The Herald.

The win also lifted him to second in the Drivers’ Championship standings, narrowing the gap to Antonelli while maintaining Mercedes’ advantage in the Constructors’ Championship.

With momentum now firmly on their side, Mercedes heads to Silverstone full of confidence, hoping Austria will prove to be the turning point in an increasingly competitive 2026 F1 season.
