The illicit export of stolen vehicles, which are frequently concealed in containers, is now being closely monitored and investigated by the United States authorities.

The move is part of the US Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) larger campaign to counter transnational criminal groups who use international trade routes to carry out illegal activities.

Safeguarding the integrity of international commerce relies heavily on this effort, as stopping the illegal export from leaving the country is deemed critical in helping deter crime.

According to a report by The Maritime Executive, Thomas Mahn, director of the Area Port of Houston/Galveston, stated that “our officers are dedicated to ensuring that stolen property does not leave the country and that those responsible for these crimes are held accountable”.

“These interceptions highlight the critical role CBP plays in protecting American communities and businesses from criminal activity.”

Over 30 vehicles seized

As detailed in the latest report, since October 2024, the CBP has stopped the illegal shipment of 32 vehicles to countries in the Middle East, West Africa, Central America, and South America by intercepting them at the ports of Houston and Galveston.

The recovered vehicles – reported to have a total value of US$3 million – ranged from luxury sedans to pickup trucks and arrived at the ports hidden in containers, about to be smuggled out of the country.

As per the CBP, officers identified discrepancies in the export documentation of the vehicles, resulting in flagging and the initiation of an investigation.

A probe then revealed that the vehicles were stolen from different locations across the country.

Theft a growing problem

Two Cuban nationals were arrested and charged with involvement in a major criminal organisation connected to the export of stolen automobiles two months before the interception occurred.

The majority of the vehicles were purportedly shipped to Mexico via the El Paso and Hidalgo County ports of entry.

Notably, the CPB claims that auto theft is a growing problem in the United States and a threat that has compelled the agency to step up its efforts to combat illicit trade.

The seizures are thus part of a larger sweep that also targets other contraband that violates US export laws, including weapons, illicit money, counterfeit consumer items, and drugs.
