Malaysia has demanded answers and accountability after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), detaining Malaysian citizens and blocking crucial humanitarian aid destined for Gaza.

‘Blatant assault’ on humanitarian principles & Palestinian rights

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a sharp condemnation of Israel’s action, calling it a “blatant assault” on a peaceful mission and vowing to pursue justice through all available channels.

“I condemn in the strongest terms Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla,” the premier said in a statement, according to Bernama.

He emphasised that the move was not only an attack on humanitarian principles but also “a clear display of contempt for the rights of the Palestinian people and global public conscience.”

Detention of Malaysian volunteers

The GSF, carrying essential supplies and volunteers, aimed to break the blockade of Gaza, where Palestinians face dire conditions.

However, the flotilla was met with Israeli forces, who reportedly surrounded the vessels, jammed their radar, and deployed water cannons.

The situation has taken a personal turn, with the confirmation that eight Malaysians, including singer Zizi Kirana, among those detained.

The fate of five other Malaysians who were aboard the GSF remains uncertain.

Malaysia has staunchly defended the flotilla’s mission, asserting it was a legitimate and peaceful mission aimed at delivering much-needed assistance to Palestinians facing genocide, starvation and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Government’s top priority

Anwar vowed to ensure the safety and dignity of the Malaysian citizens, stressing that the government will not allow them to be compromised with impunity.

The government has reportedly dispatched a legal team to Amman, Jordan, to work alongside Israeli human rights lawyers in securing the release of the detained activists.

Lawyer Fahmi Abd Moin, who is leading the Malaysian legal team, has pledged to work closely with their Israeli counterparts.

Call for decisive international action

Meanwhile, Anwar directly called on the United Nations Security Council and the international community to take decisive action.

“The international community must no longer tolerate Israel’s blatant disregard for global norms and principles,” declared the Malaysian leader, underscoring the need for strict enforcement of international law.

He said his leadership would remain committed to pressing for justice and an end to the decades of oppression faced by the Palestinian people.

“We will not relent in demanding an end to the injustice and dispossession that have plagued Palestine for generations,” he affirmed.
