Kevin Owens shocked the world as he made a surprise return to the WWE and earned a WWE Championship opportunity on night two of SummerSlam.
Owens was absent from the company for 17 months, as he suffered a neck injury that threatened his professional wrestling career.
Sami Zayn was initially set to battle Finn Balor for a shot at CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship, but neither of the two ended the show as the victor.
Before the match began, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis interrupted Zayn and Balor, stating that he made an executive decision to add a participant to the match.
Gunther then came out, who faced and beat Aldis the night before in a grudge match.
However, Aldis yet again interrupted, stating that he will make the opening match a Fatal 4-Way, meaning that the bout needs one more participant.
Right on cue, out came Owens as the fans were all on their feet for the return of the Prizefighter.
Like seeing a ghost
Zayn was irate with the addition of Gunther, but he was in disbelief with the appearance of Owens.
Too stunned to move, Zayn stared from the corner as Owens fought off Gunther and Balor with two Cannonballs.
Owens and Zayn then faced off in the middle of the ring, as the two best friends from Canada shared a hug.
Knowing what was at stake, the two men then unloaded punches at one another.
Owens looked unstoppable during the match, moving and flying as if he did not go through a neck injury.
At one point, Owens hit a Swanton Bomb on the three men outside of the ring and hit Gunther with another one in the middle of the squared circle in quick succession.
“You are supposed to ease yourself back into the action when you’ve had a long injury lay-off, but Kevin Owens does not ease into anything,” commentator Wade Barrett said as Owens pulled off the high-flying manoeuvre.

Owens goes for gold
During the last stage of the match, Owens hit Balor and Gunther with two Stunners, as he looked for a third against his friend Zayn.
However, Zayn countered with a Blue Thunder Bomb, but it was not enough for the pinfall.
Zayn then looked for a Helluva Kick against a stunned Owens, but the Prizefighter came to his senses and hit his opponent with a Superkick.
Owens then hit Zayn with a Stunner, winning the match and earning an opportunity to battle CM Punk for his Undisputed WWE Championship in the near future.
