Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah believes departing defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is ‘one of probably the best players in the club’s history’ – and hopes he doesn’t get booed again when the Reds face Brighton on Monday night.
England right-back Alexander-Arnold did not follow Salah and Virgil van Dijk in signing new contracts at Anfield this term – and will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
He is set to join Spanish giants Real Madrid and that news irked some sections of the Liverpool fanbase, who booed the 26-year-old when he came off the bench in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
Salah saddened
Salah admits he was saddened by the booing, considering Alexander-Arnold came through the club’s academy and has made 353 senior appearances for the Merseyside outfit.
He told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football pundit Gary Neville: “I think somehow the fans were being harsh with him.
“I think he didn’t deserve it at the time, he deserved the fans to treat him the best way possible because he gave it all to the fans.
“I was surprised because this is not how we act as Liverpool fans.
“We shouldn’t act this way with anyone who always appreciates the people, who came here even for six months.
“Imagine someone who gives you his all for 20 years. It shouldn’t be like this.
“I hope that will change next game, against Brighton or in the last game of the season, because he deserves the farewell.”

Pivotal to success
Alexander-Arnold has played a pivotal role in the success enjoyed under Jurgen Klopp in recent years, winning the Premier League twice (once with Klopp, and once with Arne Slot) as well as lifting the Champions League trophy.
But Salah says he should not be criticised for wanting to take on a new challenge.
The Egyptian superstar added on Sky Sports: “I really love him. I think he deserves the best farewell leaving the club.
“He has done a lot for the city and done a lot for the club and he’s one of probably the best players in the club’s history. He gave it all.
A new challenge
“I think he needed a new challenge. He spoke to me about it. It’s his decision for sure.
“He’s 25, 26 years old and won it all twice or three times. What more can he have done?
“He just needs to go, change and challenge himself. People don’t know about it much but he spent 20 years in the club.
“I really wish him the best. I’ll always be in contact with him.”
