As the cinema awards season approaches, the first – thorny – revelations about nominees have been made public.

The latest gossip involves American singer and actress Ariana Grande, who will not be among those receiving a golden statue this year.

The ‘Wicked: For Good’ star was snubbed at this year’s Academy Awards nominations, where her interpretation of the witch Glinda could have gained her a nod in the Best Supporting Actress category.

The reason? According to an anonymous Oscar voter, the star’s relationship with her co-star Cynthia Erivo “creeped a lot of people out”.

‘No one wanted to go through that again’

During the promotional tours of ‘Wicked’ and its sequel, ‘Wicked: For Good’, which came out in 2025, Grande, 32, and Erivo, 39, made no secret of their special, close relationship.

The pair were often seen holding hands during red carpets and interviews, often getting emotional or crying when talking about their connection.

The behaviour was often judged as ‘cringeworthy’ by social media users, with certain moments becoming viral and sparking mocking online.

Fans were also worried about the noticeable weight loss both stars showed during the promotional tour.

Movie ‘not that good’

Erivo and Grande’s attitude apparently influenced Academy members when it came to nominations, and was compared to ‘cosplaying’.

“I was just completely turned off by their promotional performances,” a voter said.

“They creeped a lot of people out and in their rush to feel authentic, came off as cosplaying.”

Another Academy member said: “The movie wasn’t that good and [Erivo and Grande] sucked the air out of any red carpet they were on – and no one wanted to go through that again.”

“Think of it this way,” the voter said, “we were protecting Ariana from her anxiety – and Cynthia from having to intervene. Again.”
