TV news: ‘The Boys’ season five is headed for a destructive final two episodes

Amazon Prime’s hit superhero satire ‘The Boys’ approaches the conclusion of its final season after this week’s explosive episode.

‘The Boys’ (2019-present) takes place in a world where superpowered individuals, or ‘Supes’, are not the heroes you might expect them to be.

Instead, they are a corrupt troupe of self-interested hedonists, acting as an extension of the powerful corporation Vought International.

Known for its crude humour and satirical political commentary, the series initially gained traction as a refreshing take on the superhero genre.

At the head of the Supes is posterboy Homelander (Anthony Starr), a deranged, egotistical manchild who happens to be the strongest Supe of all.

However, the Boys, a questionable group of mismatched civilians, have dedicated their lives to put an end to Vought, Homelander and the reign of Supes.

After five seasons and a spin-off series, ‘Gen V’, the world of ‘The Boys’ is nearing its ultimate conclusion with only two episodes remaining.

What’s happening in season five?

The fifth season finds the Boys and the Supes both clutching onto the ropes.

Premiering on March 19, the season opens with the Boys divided, with half of them in a Vought containment camp, and the others on the run as rebels against the Supes.

Their fate is left in the hands of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), their unpolished leader who took a turn for the worse at the end of season four.

Meanwhile, Homelander’s exponential descent into madness has left him unhinged and uncertain of who he can trust.

Surrounded by characters who serve him with fear, incompetence or hatred, his god-complex has only inflated – so much so that he orders the creation of his own church.

The season’s major plotline sees the Boys and Homelander chasing the same trail with opposing goals.

With a desperate Homelander deadset on achieving immortality, and Butcher committed to releasing a Supe-killing virus, the stakes for both sides are at an alltime high.

What to expect from the final two episodes

Episode six ends with a shock that sets up a disastrous finale to the series.

With Homelander winning the race to V1, the substance that solidifies his immortality, Butcher’s plan to finally take him down is seemingly thwarted.

The future of the protagonists is dangerously uncertain, as the Boys remain separated amidst a strengthening force of Homelander’s allies.

Although the season had a slower start, the astounding events from this week’s episode set up a dramatic conclusion for Amazon’s hit series.

The final two episodes are set to release on Amazon Prime on May 13 and 20.
