Amanda Serrano matched the hallowed knockout record of women’s boxing legend Christy Martin with a second-round technical knockout win over Cheyenne Hanson in a world title fight on May 30 in El Paso, Texas.

Serrano picks up record-tying KO win, retain WBA, WBO featherweight titles

The Puerto Rican Serrano had the fans’ attention from the opening bell at El Paso County Coliseum. She successfully defended the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight title by overwhelming Hanson from the start.

The end came when the referee stopped the contest at 2:25 of round two. The seven-division world champion unloaded unanswered combinations that stunned her rival, which ultimately halted the bout.

Serrano spent the first round feeling out Hanson and her movements. But in the next round, she went on the offensive and increased the pressure on the challenger.

The champion backed Hanson on the ropes and completed the stoppage minutes later.

Following the victory, Serrano’s record improved to 49-4-1 (win-loss-draw) with 32 knockouts, tying Christy Martin’s record for most stoppage wins in women’s boxing history.

Hanson fell to her third loss as against 17 wins.

Serrano bares three-minute rounds help her dissect Hanson

In a post-fight interview, Serrano disclosed that the three-minute length of each round helped her study opponents more effectively. The Puerto Rican said that she initiated the offensive in respect of her foe, who is a mandatory challenger.

The women’s boxer noted that she was trying to figure out Hanson while trying to land her punches. During the break in between the first and second round, she told her trainer that she has everything figured out.

Serrano also commented that extending the rounds to three minutes helps fighters build up their offense and give them more opportunities to score using punches.

She acknowledged her feat of tying Martin’s knockout mark and is confident she can break the record with a 50th win of her career.

The 37-year-old Puerto Rican thanked the fans for supporting and helping the emergence of women’s boxing. Her performance came in front of the largest combat sports crowd ever hosted at the El Paso County Coliseum.

Serrano is still spotless at featherweight and continues improving her record in division titles won, already placing her among the most accomplished fighters in women’s boxing history.
