Young instrumentalists from across Southeast Asia will gather in the Malaysian capital this June for a landmark event aimed at raising artistic standards and fostering cross‑border cultural ties.
Cross-border cultural exchange
The inaugural ASEAN Youth Orchestra Festival Kuala Lumpur (AYOFKL) 2026 runs from June 21 to 28, with backing from the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Hosted by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), it will draw participants from seven nations, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
According to MPO Music Talent Development head Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, AYOFKL 2026 strives to build greater proficiency among young home-grown talents and elevate their profile in regional artistic spaces.
“Music is a universal language that transcends borders, connecting young people and communities. In the orchestral world, musicians grow and mature through frequent performances and interactions with one another.”
“This festival also fosters stronger friendships and unity through cross-cultural understanding, collaborative learning, shared experiences, and social interaction,” he told national news agency Bernama.

Building unity and long-term bonds
Ahmad Muhriz further noted that the initiative builds on existing training programmes for young performers.
“The MPO trains orchestra musicians from talented youths from the age of 10 to 28.”
“Now it’s time for them to come forward and gain experience with other young musicians from ASEAN countries,” he said.
He highlighted that professional relationships and social interactions forged throughout the week-long festival are expected to create new opportunities for collaboration that will continue long after the event concludes.
84 carefully selected participants will take part in a week of learning, interaction and joint performances.
The gathering also serves to showcase the region’s diverse artistic traditions.
Masterclasses and grand performances
The schedule includes 12 free masterclasses led by seasoned professionals at Rumah Tangsi between June 23 and 25.
Residents and visitors can also attend a public showcase titled MPYO & Friends: Echoes of the Region at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall Auditorium on June 25, with entry open to all.
The concert will feature the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra alongside well‑known local singers.
The festival will conclude with a formal gala performance at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall on June 27.
Conducted by MPO’s Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga, the combined youth ensemble will share the stage with pianist Celestine Yoong Qian Yi.
