The Philippine government is ramping up efforts to enhance science and innovation by strengthening the collaboration between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

This initiative aims to improve science education and foster a new generation of innovators who will contribute to national development.

Importance of education

Education Secretary Sonny Angara and Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr emphasised the importance of education in advancing scientific progress.

Angara highlighted the connection between science and national growth, stressing that innovation is key to economic and technological advancement.

Speaking at the appointment ceremony for new campus directors of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS), Solidum underscored the role of education in shaping the country’s scientific future.

“We are very happy with the appointment of former Senator, now DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, because we believe that the success of science, technology, and innovation really lies in our educational system starting from our youth,” he said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.

He expressed confidence in Angara’s leadership, citing his background in policy-making and his commitment to strengthening science and technology programs.

Equipping the young with skills

Beyond the PSHS system, both agencies are looking to expand their efforts to make science education more accessible to students across the country.

The initiative seeks to integrate stronger science and technology components into the curriculum, equipping young Filipinos with the skills needed to compete in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

The partnership between DepEd and DOST reflects the Philippine government’s broader push for innovation-driven development, recognizing that a strong foundation in science and technology is essential for long-term economic growth and global competitiveness.
