Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are back to solving chilling crime puzzles in Season 5 of Hulu’s hit murder-mystery comedy, “Only Murders in the Building” — this time with their eyes set on New York’s mob scene.
The Emmy-nominated whodunit follows Charles Haden-Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora, true-crime fanatics who start their own podcast to investigate murders taking place in their Upper West Side apartment complex, the Arconia.
More mystery, secrets to unravel
Just like the past four years, the new season opens with — you guessed it — murder!
It picks up with Charles, Oliver, and Mabel finding the lifeless body of Lester (Teddy Coluca) — the Arconia’s beloved doorman for 32 years — in a courtyard fountain, and a woman seeking help in investigating her husband’s disappearance.
Police have declared Lester’s death an accident, but the trio podcasters believe he was murdered.
While investigating, the trio find themselves entangled in a web of secrets connecting billionaires, old-school mobsters, and residents of the Arconia.
Or as Charles’ television character, Aristotle Brazzos, would say, “This sends the investigation into a whole new direction.”
New faces join stellar cast
Season 5 features newcomers Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, and Logan Lerman as billionaires; Bobby Cannavale as a mobster and Téa Leoni as his wife; Keegan-Michael Key as the mayor of New York and a fan of the “Only Murders in the Building” podcast; Dianne Wiest as Lester’s widow; Beanie Feldstein as Mabel’s former friend who is now a celebrity; and Jermaine Fowler as the Arconia’s new doorman.
They join the show’s already stellar cast: Michael Cyril Creighton, Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Nathan Lane, Richard Kind, and Jackie Hoffman.
Jane Lynch and Julian Chi are also returning for flashback scenes.

‘Classic meets modern, old versus new’
John Hoffman, who co-created the series with Martin, said the fifth season will touch on current events in New York.
“I think we’re doing something we haven’t done before in season five that pertains to New York today, right now in the headlines, in both New York and the world at large in certain ways,” he told The Hollywood Reporter during an interview in early August.
“But it’s all about our show — classic meets modern, old versus new, and putting those things together: Two classic comedians, the most modern of young women, and classic architecture, meaning the modern technology of what’s going on that is very much front and centre.
“And there’s a whole new and old world at the same time, very specific to New York and our building.”
‘Only Murders in the Building’ companion podcast debuts
Ahead of the September 9 premiere, Disney+ and Hulu announced the launch of the official audio and video podcast of “Only Murders in the Building” to give fans behind-the-scenes content and interviews.
Hosted by series regular Creighton, the podcast will delve into each episode with the help of its creators and cast members.
Upcoming guests include co-creators Hoffman and Martin, as well as stars Short, Gomez, Waltz, Lynch, and Key.
Each episode will be available for streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts, among other platforms.
“These (podcast episodes) are like a backstage pass for their favourite series, and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to expand their viewing experience, go behind the scenes with our creators and casts, and continue the conversation beyond each episode in an engaging and entertaining new way,” Shannon Ryan, president of marketing for direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment Television, said.
