George Russell has admitted that contract talks with Mercedes have yet to properly begin, citing the team’s broader strategic considerations – most notably the pursuit of Max Verstappen – as a reason for the delay.

While the Briton remains under contract until the end of 2025, he has made it clear that both he and Mercedes are keen to continue their partnership.

The issue, however, lies in timing.

With Mercedes still assessing their long-term driver line-up in the wake of Lewis Hamilton’s shock move to Ferrari, Russell finds himself in a professional holding pattern.

Solid performances

“Toto has made it clear to me that how I’m performing is as good as anybody,” the Brit told Sky Sports F1.

“There is only one driver that you can debate in terms of performance. These are his words and not my words, and that is why I have no concern about my future.

“But there are two seats to every team and I guess he needs to think who are those two drivers.”

Toto Wolff has made no secret of his admiration for Verstappen, and the prospect of taking him away from Red Bull continues to hover over any internal negotiations.

How long can Russell wait?

Russell is no stranger to playing the long game.

He waited years in the Williams midfield before being called up to Mercedes – and has handled the transition into a leadership role with quiet authority.

But with a win already under his belt and strong performances across the last two seasons, it’s easy to see why he might want a firmer commitment from the team.

Still, there’s no sign of friction – yet. Russell insists he remains fully focused on performance, not politics.

“When you’re in the car, you’re not thinking about contracts. You’re thinking about going as fast as possible, and doing the best job for the team,” he added.

But as Formula 1’s driver market begins to take shape for 2026 and beyond, Russell’s situation will be one to watch.

He may be patient for now, but Mercedes can only keep him waiting for so long.
