The 1975 headlined Glastonbury Festival’s Pyramid Stage on Friday night to top off a loaded schedule that featured performances by Lewis Capaldi, Alanis Morisette, Lorde, and CMAT.

They are the first British band to headline the stage since Kasabian’s closing performance in 2014.

The rock group delivered some of their greatest hits in front of the Glastonbury crowd, such as ‘Chocolate’, ‘Love It If We Made It’, and ‘The Sound’, in what was an impressive performance.

Matty Healy takes centre stage

Chain smoking and sipping on Guinness throughout, Matty Healy brought his trademark blend of cockiness and vulnerability to Glastonbury.

Early in the performance, he informed the crowd of his anxiety in the moment: “This is really scary and I’m really nervous and I thank you so much for coming,”

“I know I’m a rock star, but this is really scary.”

As the set progressed, the singer’s mood shifted from anxiety to overconfidence, giving himself lofty praise for his own songwriting ability.

“What this moment is making me realise is that I, probably, am the best songwriter of my generation,” he said.

“The best poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. A generational poet.”

Healy later walked back his comments, saying: “I was only joking about being a poet.”

Lewis Capaldi makes emotional return to Glastonbury

Lewis Capaldi made a grand emotional return to Glastonbury, two years after his last performance on the Pyramid Stage.

Capaldi performed a surprise short set in front of the huge crowd, who welcomed him back with a warm show of affection.

The Scot, who suffers from anxiety and tourettes, struggled to finish his set on the Pyramid Stage in 2023. The audience ultimately stepped in to help Capaldi finish his performance in what was one of the festival’s all-time heartfelt moments.

This episode led to the singer taking a two-year break from live performance to focus on his mental health and wellbeing.

Capaldi grateful to be back

“Glastonbury it’s so good to be back,” Capaldi said addressing the thousands in attendance.

“I’m not going to say much up here today because if I did I might start crying.”

He ended his short set by playing ‘Someone You Loved’, the same song he struggled to finish in his 2023 performance.

“I couldn’t sing this song two years ago. I might struggle to finish it today for different reasons,” he said, overcome with emotion.

“My name is Lewis Capaldi and I’m f—- back, baby.”

Capaldi released a comeback single ‘Survive’ on the Friday morning, which fuelled speculation that the singer would be making an appearance at the show.

The single is his first release since his second album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent in 2023.

Lorde unexpectedly kicks off Glastonbury

Capaldi was not the only unexpected appearance at the festival with Lorde performing a surprise set on the Woodsies Stage in the morning.

The New Zealand singer performed the entirety of her new album Virgin – which had only released earlier in the day – to the morning crowd.

Fans were ultimately supportive, if not somewhat confused, as they tried to follow along with the unfamiliar material.

Lorde addressed the crowd, explaining the album’s emotional weight, saying it ‘took a lot out of her.’

“I didn’t know if I’d make another record to be honest. but I’m back and completely free,” she said.

Lorde closed her set out with two of her most popular songs ‘Ribs’ and ‘Green Lights’ as a cascade of lights and lasers were shot across the stage and the audience.

CMAT and Alanis Morissette make memorable debuts

Earlier in the day, CMAT produced a memorable performance on the Pyramid Stage, in what was her biggest performance to date in her career.

The Irish singer performed songs from her upcoming album Euro Country, captivating the crowd to laugh, dance, and tear up with her emotionally-charged set.

Speaking after her performance, the singer was ‘shocked’ by the positive reception to her set.

“It’s taken my entire life to get to the Pyramid Stage, it’s constantly grafting” she remarked.

Alanis Morisette also made her long overdue debut at the Glastonbury Festival, performing hits from her 1995 best-selling album Jagged Little Pill

Fans sang along to ‘You Outta Know’ and ‘Right Through You’ as they enjoyed the throwback to the now thirty-year old album.

During ‘Ironic’, thousands in the audience each held up spoons, in reference to a lyric in the song.
