The Malaysian government has announced that it would intensify its surveillance of foreign agents operating within the country, citing “specific threats” to national security as the primary justification.

Gaza advocacy sparks surveillance

Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil revealed that the heightened movements of foreign agents are primarily linked to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s vigorous support for the Palestinian cause.

While maintaining that the nation’s security situation is currently stable and under control, the official stressed the need for continued vigilance and cautioned that potential risks should not be underestimated.

He asserted that Malaysia’s unwavering position on Palestine is firmly rooted in humanitarian principles and a commitment to justice rather than being motivated by emotions or political expediency.

“There is no denying that since the government and the Prime Minister’s strong position on Gaza and Palestine, he has become one of the most closely monitored leaders in Southeast Asia by these elements,” he said, according to Bernama.

Multiple security threats

Fahmi, who is also the Communications minister, stated that the country is particularly concerned about potential cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure or government systems, as well as allegations of foreign meddling in Malaysia’s domestic politics.

He also mentioned the possibility of espionage and information theft, with fears that foreign agents are attempting to steal sensitive government or corporate information.

Border fortifications and cyber shield activation

In response to these perceived threats, the minister confirmed that the state is taking several steps to enhance national security.

He noted that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is intensifying its monitoring of suspected foreign agents, utilizing both traditional and advanced surveillance techniques.

“Security is non-negotiable, and PDRM is constantly monitoring the situation. We are also regularly briefed, including through the National Security Council meetings,” he added.

Border security measures are also being strengthened to prevent the entry of individuals deemed to pose a threat to national security.

Furthermore, Fahmi disclosed that the government is also investing in enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructure and government systems from cyberattacks.

“The government takes these threats very seriously. We will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect our national security and the interests of our citizens.

“We are committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that any actions taken are in accordance with our constitution and international obligations,” he stated.
