David Moyes has urged Everton to show defensive ‘resilience’ in Saturday’s Merseyside derby after comparing Liverpool’s knack of scoring late winners to Manchester United’s similar habit under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Arne Slot’s side continued their remarkable sequence of last-gasp goals on Wednesday night, with Virgil van Dijk’s 93rd-minute header giving them a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The result was the fifth consecutive time that the Reds have scored a winner in the 83rd minute or later.
Moyes urges Everton to concentrate
Looking ahead to Saturday’s lunchtime showdown at Anfield, Moyes told reporters: “The better sides tend to sort of wear you down a little bit and concentration changes.
“In the main we’ve shown resilience in defence so we’ll be looking to maintain that.
“We are all aware of their late goals, it was the same with Fergie, he used to be getting Fergie time and in the referees ear saying they need to get one second extra time and getting late goals because his team kept preparing themselves to score and I see that as the same with Liverpool.”
Moyes, however, can sense a chink in Liverpool’s defensive armour after seeing the Reds concede two goal leads on several occasions already this season.
He added: “As much as Liverpool have shown at different times where they have been very good but other times when they have shown some vulnerability when they have conceded goals.
“We will have to try and take advantage of those moments as well.”

Reds ‘entitled’ to spend big
The Scot, meanwhile, has no complaints about Slot’s summer spending spree, which saw £450million splashed out on new talent at Anfield.
He continued: “You have to earn the right to spend money.
“First of all you have to win and be in the big competitions which make the money.
“I found at West Ham three years in Europe allowed us to spend money and bring money in.
“From that point of view I think Liverpool are entitled to do it.
“I heard Arne defending himself saying he’s brought in a lot of money as well.
“But I still think they’ve spent more on one player than we have on the whole squad.”
