A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and World Maritime University (WMU) to reiterate their dedication to fostering the growth of maritime leaders and supporting the development of capacity for the global maritime community.
The MOU, which will deepen the collaboration between MPA and WMU in promoting training and manpower development for the maritime sector.
It is grounded on the long-standing partnership established through previous agreements signed in 2015 and 2019, respectively.
Mr Ang Wee Keong, chief executive of MPA, and Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., president of WMU, signed the MOU on the sidelines of the 137th Session of the International Maritime Organisation Council in London, according to the official media release by MPA.
What’s under the new MOU
In accordance with the agreement, both parties will work together on specialised training programmes, promote faculty and expertise exchanges, and increase opportunities for members of both organisations to share knowledge.
MPA and WMU started their partnership in 2004 when the former hosted students from WMU on annual field studies to Singapore.
Over 400 students from 70 countries have come to the city-state thus far.
These field studies will be carried out by MPA under the new MOU.

Increased exposure on WMU’s offerings
MPA will also help raise awareness of WMU’s offerings of professional development courses on shipping and port-related topics amongst maritime professionals in Singapore.

In response, Professor Maximo said: “The renewal of our long-standing partnership with MPA reflects a shared commitment to capacity development and human capital.
“Together, we are empowering maritime professionals with the knowledge, skills and global perspectives needed to lead the transformation of the maritime industry towards a more sustainable and resilient future.”
