American actor and musician Donald Glover, who performs on stage under the name of Childish Gambino, has revealed the reason behind the cancellation of some world tour dates in 2024.

The Atlanta actor, 42, told his Los Angeles audience on Saturday night that he had had a stroke.

During his set at the Flog Gnaw festival, Glover said: “I was doing this world tour, I was having lots of fun, really loving seeing you guys out there.

“I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana and I did the show anyway.

“I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke’.”

‘You got one life, guys’

In October 2024, Glover posted on his social media accounts that he had to cancel the remaining dates of his The New World Tour.

At the time, the rapper only stated that the reason behind the decision was due to surgery and the subsequent recovery.

“As of now, I have surgery scheduled, and I need time to heal,” he posted on X.

On Saturday, Glover went into detail and explained that, during that time, he also broke his foot and that doctors “found a hole” in his heart.

“They found a hole in my heart. So I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery,” the musician clarified.

“They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realise you have one.

“You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing.”

The end of an era

Earlier last year, Glover announced that his career as Childish Gambino was finally coming to an end.

“It’s not fulfilling,” he told The New York Times at the time.

“I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.”

He also explained that it was getting increasingly difficult to juggle his acting career, his music craft, and his personal life, especially in light of the birth of his second child.

“I just don’t wanna have to do this. […] This is a character that can die, […] and I like endings. So I was like, ‘that’s a good way to get rid of it’,” Glover explained to WSJ. Style.

“I just don’t wanna be 55 doing ‘Bonfire’,” he added.

The New World Tour was supposed to be the final act of the Gambino era for Glover, and it brought the musician back on stage after a five-year absence.
