New Tottenham boss Thomas Frank says there is a ‘good vibe’ around the London club – and wants his team to be ‘brave and aggressive’ on the ball.

The former Brentford manager faced the press on Friday, fielding questions around his exit from the Bees and the step up in pressure that comes with managing Spurs.

Frank enjoyed a hugely successful seven-year spell in charge of the Bees after joining them from Brondby in October 2018.

The Dane won an impressive 132 of his 317 games in charge of Brentford, drawing 77 and losing 108.

The Bees finished in 10th on 56 points in the Premier League table last season, whereas Tottenham ended in 17th after winning just 11 of 38 league games.

Spurs won the Europa League trophy under Ange Postecoglou – but the Australian gaffer paid the price for a dismal league campaign, and was replaced by Frank in June this year.

Super exciting

The 51-year-old told a press conference: “We haven’t played a game yet but it is super exciting.

“A massive club, huge club in England and the world.

“I am super excited. Everyone has been kind, friendly and open minded.

“The best thing is that it feels natural. It’s football and good players, preparing them with good staff to make sure we are ready to hit the ground running.

“[I am] very proud to sit in this chair and to be part of the next chapter in Tottenham’s history.

“I will do everything, every day, to work towards taking this club to new heights. That is the ambition.

“If I was not ambitious, I would not sit here. I am looking forward to it.”

Fantastic time with Bees

Frank has no regrets about leaving Brentford, admitting the lure of managing a team with the pedigree and reputation of Tottenham was too hard to turn down.

He added: “I had a fantastic time at Brentford with fantastic people. I loved my time there.

“I felt like maybe it was time to challenge myself and to get another opportunity.

“When a club of Tottenham’s magnitude are knocking at your door, I couldn’t turn it down.”

More scrutiny

Frank knows there will be more ‘scrutiny’ on him at Tottenham, where chairman Daniel Levy has been ruthless with managers if they do not deliver results on the pitch.

But the new Spurs boss attempted to play down that pressure, telling fans (and arguably Levy) to expect some defeats in the coming season.

Frank said: “There is more, and will be more, scrutiny. I said to the staff that I promise you one thing, we will lose football matches.

“I have never seen a team not lose. There is Arsenal – who we can’t mention!

“It will happen, of course. That’s a natural pressure. The biggest pressure is the pressure I will put on myself.”

Brave and aggressive

Then he gave an insight into the style of play he wants Tottenham to play under his management, saying: “I want us to be brave and very aggressive. I also want to attack.

“Brave is absolutely linked. To dare is to do. If you are not brave, it is difficult to achieve anything.

“I see happy players. Positive and smiling energy, training really well with a good vibe around the place.

“There should be a good vibe, they just won the Europa League title!

“Going into the new season, football is about dreaming and hoping.”
