The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has ignited a major ecclesiastical internal conflict by announcing its intention to consecrate new bishops this summer without the required permission from the Holy See.
The move, which risks a formal schism, has triggered an immediate diplomatic response from the Vatican.
Unauthorised consecrations
According to the National Catholic Reporter, the traditionalist society intends to proceed with the consecrations in July 2026.
By acting without a papal mandate, the group is repeating the defiant actions of its founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who was excommunicated in 1988 for a similar move.
The society views these ordinations as a “state of necessity” to ensure the survival of the traditional Latin Mass and the formation of its clergy, despite the lack of canonical approval, as per The Catholic Register.
Under the Code of Canon Law, the consecration of a bishop without the express consent of the Pontiff results in latae sententiae (automatic) excommunication for both the consecrating bishops and those being ordained.
This planned defiance signals a significant breakdown in the fragile relationship between the traditionalist group and the central government of the Catholic Church.

Papal crisis
The announcement has presented a defining challenge for the nearly one-year-old papacy of Pope Leo XIV.
The Associated Press reported that the Pope is facing a severe crisis as he attempts to manage the fallout of this planned rebellion.
The move is seen as a direct challenge to the Pope’s authority and a rejection of recent efforts to bring the society back into full communion with Rome.
The situation highlights a deepening divide within the Church as traditionalist factions increasingly distance themselves from the current administration’s liturgical and theological direction.

Vatican intervention
In a bid to prevent a permanent split, the Vatican has initiated emergency contact with the group’s leadership.
EWTN News confirmed that a meeting has been scheduled between Vatican officials and the SSPX to discuss the implications of the unauthorised ceremony.
The Pillar reports that the Vatican’s doctrine chief is set to hold talks, representing a final diplomatic effort to resolve the impasse.
While the Holy See remains open to dialogue, officials have stressed that the appointment of bishops remains a core prerogative of the Successor of Peter.
The global Catholic community is awaiting the outcome of these discussions to see if a schism can be averted.
