Alexander Isak’s transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool has sent shockwaves through British football.

On September 1, Transfer Deadline Day, Liverpool completed the signing of the Swedish striker for a staggering £125million – the most expensive transfer in British football history.

The deal eclipsed the previous record set by Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, also surpassing Liverpool’s fee for Florian Wirtz earlier this summer.

Isak penned a six-year contract and will trade St James’ Park for Anfield with hopes of creating history there while wearing the number nine shirt.

“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve,” he said.

“I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything.”

A complicated exit from Newcastle

Isak leaves behind a complex chapter at Newcastle, where tensions had grown after he publicly criticised the club over broken promises and chose to train separately during pre-season.

His absence in the opening matches only added to the drama.

Newcastle’s handling of his exit added to the tension. The club announced his departure in a pointedly terse 37-word statement that did not thank him or mention his achievements.

“Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.

“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”

Wissa steps in as replacement

Newcastle responded swiftly by signing Yoane Wissa from Brentford as Isak’s replacement.

The deal, worth around £55million, was finalised on Deadline Day with seconds to spare.

At 28, Wissa brings pace, power and a strong work ethic.

Wearing the iconic number nine shirt, he hopes to provide the firepower Newcastle lost with Isak’s departure.

Together, these moves mark one of the most dramatic endings to a Premier League transfer window in recent memory.

A conclusion signified by a British record broken and a club rapidly filling the void left by their star striker.
