The German city Hamburg, known as Hansestadt (Hanseatic) Hamburg amongst Germans, is probably most known for the major port it is home to. 

However, Hamburg is much more than a major import and export hub.  

When one gets the chance, it is definitely worth discovering the city and its sights and activities.

Explore the Hanseatic’s maritime flair 

If you have a love for water, then Hamburg is just the place for you. 

From lakes, to rivers, to canals, to beaches it has everything a water baby could possibly ask for. 

You can enjoy nature and stroll along the water, or relax at the beach to wind down.  

The main star of the maritime show, however, is the city’s Maritime Museum located within “HafenCity”. 

This big museum covers 3000 years of maritime history from all around the world, showcasing various different items such as paintings, images and model ships. 

It is the ideal place for learning and expanding knowledge on this topic.  

Stroll around the St. Pauli district 

St. Pauli is an infamous district in the city of Hamburg, likely best-known for “Reeperbahn”, the red-light district. 

You can take guided tours here to learn about its history and other aspects. 

There are different types of tours for adults only, as well as more child friendly ones.  

St. Pauli, however, has also other things to offer: plenty of street art to look at, the famous Davidwache police station, which is featured in many German films, as well as the Beatles-Platz, which displays an homage to the Beatles.

A haven for foodies 

There are a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to enjoy. However, with Hamburg located directly at the water, eating fish is a must. 

One of the city’s most popular to-go snacks is the so-called “Fischbrötchen” – which is a fish sandwich. 

There are various places in which to enjoy this Hanseatic delicacy, but if you happen to be there on a Sunday, you should check-out the famous fish market which has been running since 1703. 

Fish is not the only thing you can get at this market – there are several different stalls to stroll around and have a look at. 

Plus, you can often enjoy live music as well as German beer there.  

Hamburg’s cultural and architectural side 

For culture lovers, Hamburg is a great place to be. The city is filled with a huge variety of theatres, operas and concert halls. 

If you are a fan of these types of shows and have enough time you should absolutely attempt and go to see one. 

If you do not have enough time, or are not interested, you can still enjoy the architectural side of them. 

The Elbphilharmonie concert hall, for instance, is a building that is worth seeing. 

You can go all the way up to the roof of its plaza where you can enjoy the view of a 360-degree balcony, which will make you feel like you have boarded a cruise ship. 

There is plenty to do and see in Hamburg, so it is worth visiting, no matter how short or long the stay is.
