Now that the longest month of the year, January, has finally come to an end, many people can see the (sun)light at the end of the tunnel.
Spring will soon be upon us, but for those people who can’t wait that long and are in need of some vitamin D and sea, here are my suggestions for the best places to catch some rays while it’s still gloomy in the UK.
So, where is warm this time of year?
The Canary Islands
A firm favourite with Brits wanting some rest and relaxation in the sun and with average temperatures around 22C and 24C in February and March, it’s not hard to see why.
With between 7 and 8 hours of sunshine a day, stunning scenery and a relatively short flight time (under 5 hours from the UK), the Islands are a great option.
You may find most of the population of Merseyside on the island of Tenerife, but don’t let that put you off!
Cape Verde
The destination has been becoming increasingly popular over the last few years and the once quiet destination has now become a bustling hub of activity.
Known for its stunning, white sandy beaches, Cape Verde offers a reliable source of year-round sunshine due to its location off the coast of West Africa.
Nature fans can bask in its volcanic landscape and natural beauty, while adrenaline junkies will be spoilt for choice of water sports.
Cape Verde offers the feel of the Caribbean without the long-haul flight.
Egypt
Egypt has long offered Brits a reasonably-priced winter getaway destination.
Resorts like Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are full of family-friendly hotels with pools and bars.
Average winter temperatures are around 24 °C and holiday-makers can also make the choice to enjoy a little culture alongside their cocktails with an internal flight to Cairo or Luxor to enjoy ancient relics.

Morocco
Back to the western side of North Africa, and it’s the new kid on the block, Morocco.
Once considered a slightly more unsafe destination for tourists, Marrakech and Agadir offer travellers a safe and sunny option.
A visit to a Moroccan souk (traditional market) or a Moroccan hammam (steam bath) is highly recommended.
Marrakech temperatures are often lower than Agadir, so opt for accommodation with a heated pool to make the most of your time in the sun.
Malta
Lastly, I’m going to throw in Malta due to my personal fondness and family connection.
The weather can be hit and miss in winter, but is more ‘hit’ as you head into spring.
Malta and its smaller islands, Gozo and Comino, have an abundance of culture, history, natural scenery and amazing food.
You can opt to swim in the beautiful blue waters of the Blue Lagoon off Comino, taste delicious treats and wine in Gozo or visit one of 359 churches in Malta.
