Through an “Iwas PapuToxic” campaign, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and environmental group EcoWaste Coalition reiterated their call for a New Year celebration free of fireworks and firecrackers.
The PAWS and the EcoWaste Coalition urged people to refrain from using firecrackers to celebrate the new year through their “Iwas PapuToxic” campaign, a play on the Filipino word “paputok” (fireworks) and “toxic.”
Every year since 2006, the “Iwas PapuToxic” campaign has been conducted to push for initiatives to lower pollution and injuries caused by firecrackers throughout the holiday season.
This year’s campaign renewed the groups’ appeal for safer, cleaner festivities, citing risks to animals and the harmful effects of pollution.

PAWS warns firecrackers cause severe stress among animals
As part of the campaign, the groups organised a pet parade, where pet owners or “fur-parents” paraded with their beloved pets, who are heavily impacted by the smoke and loud noises produced by firecrackers.
Animal rights advocate Anna Cabrera stated that animals are frightened and distressed by the loud sounds of firecrackers, which can result in physical stress reactions like shaking.
She also urged pet owners to keep their dogs within the house during the celebrations to shield them from smoke and noise.
“In our country, many dogs remain caged or chained outdoors, yet PAWS advocates for them to live inside as true family members. For those who haven’t yet embraced this, we plead: please bring your dogs inside for New Year’s Eve,” she said.
‘Iwas PapuToxic’ alternatives for a better environment
Additionally, the EcoWaste Coalition claims that because of toxic smoke, fine particles and other pollutants that can exacerbate respiratory ailments – especially in children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical disorders – New Year’s Eve celebrations usually cause an increase in air pollution.
The EcoWaste Coalition promotes “Iwas PapuToxic” substitutes that safeguard people, our animal friends, and the environment, such as bottle cap tambourines, maracas de lata, pots, pans, and recycled shakers, National co-ordinator of the EcoWaste Coalition Aileen Lucero stated.
“As we prepare for 2026, we urge the public to abandon firecrackers and fireworks. Make your New Year countdown People-, Pet-, and Planet-friendly,” said Lucero.
