British man Dave Purchase, also known as “Mr. Toasty,” has attempted to set a Guinness World Record by singing Christmas songs for 42 hours straight.

Purchase has submitted to Guinness his proof, which includes videotapes, time sheets, reels, and photos, to support his claim that the record is official.

Currently, the world record for the longest marathon singing Christmas songs is held by Confidence Survival Eyong from Lagos, Nigeria, for 40 hours, achieved in December 2024, according to the Guiness Book of World Records’ official website.

Purchase began the challenge at midnight on Wednesday, December 10, and completed it on Friday, December 12.

As a rule, Dave could only take a five-minute break per hour in order to comply with the world record requirements.

He was also able to take a 20-minute break by singing nonstop for four hours.

He could only take a 20-second pause in between each song.

“It is a world record and this is what they are about. You literally push yourself to the actual limit to actually achieve that record,” said Purchase.

Mr. Toasty’s Christmas singing marathon

Purchase chose 38 songs for his Christmas song list, which were repeated 18 times each during the duration of the challenge, making a total of 684 songs throughout the 42-hour singing marathon.

The 38 songs included “Jingle Bells,” “Last Christmas,” and “Step Into Christmas.”

He also included modern Christmas hits like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

A children’s choir, a dementia choir, and joyous residents joined him throughout his singing marathon.

He stated that the attempt to break the world record is a physical as well as vocal challenge.

Purchase added that the middle range of his voice was fine, but his falsetto was slightly gone and his lower register was completely gone.

“I nearly gave up at about 4:00 on Friday morning. I felt as if I couldn’t carry on because I was hallucinating with the lack of sleep. I was falling to sleep singing the songs.”

“I thought, ‘I don’t know whether I can carry on for another 10 hours,’ but strangely enough, when the crowd started to come into the venue, the adrenaline took over,” he stated.
