Music news: Janet Jackson’s sudden appearance left Teyana Taylor in tears at the BET Awards

Teyana Taylor got the inaugural Icon of the Year award at the 2026 BET Awards on June 28, but the main thing people are talking about is how she found out.

The show kept the presenter under wraps completely, and when Janet Jackson stepped onstage instead of a member from the BET crew, Taylor became emotional before Jackson said anything.

It capped off a night that was already making history even before Taylor’s award.

Comedian Druski hosted the ceremony at 31 years old, becoming the youngest host in the show’s history and edging out Kevin Hart, who held the record after hosting in 2011.

He is also the first host whose career was built entirely online, having started out posting sketches in 2017 before becoming one of the most-followed comedians on social media.

A friendship years in the making

Jackson and Taylor were no random pairing.

Taylor has been open about how Jackson is her biggest influence, going back to a 2018 tribute performance she did in Jackson’s honor at the BMI Awards.

Taylor talked about how Jackson was one of those artists that shaped her thinking on music, choreography and the way she performs.

Over time, fans kept catching small overlaps between Taylor’s stage vibe and Jackson’s influence, thus making the whole surprise presentation feel extra meaningful for the long-time followers of both artists.

BET appears to have built the entire surprise around that history, choosing the one presenter who would actually catch Taylor off guard.

Jackson leaned into that relationship in her speech, too.

“It seems like only yesterday that our rose from Harlem grew out of the concrete and blossomed into our Icon of the Year,” Jackson said on stage.

Taylor, still in shock, responded once she reached the microphone: “They did not tell me Janet was coming.”

A big year for Taylor

The timing of the award lines up with one of the busiest years of Taylor’s career.

She earned a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for her role in “One Battle After Another,” and her album “Escape Room” earned a Grammy nomination earlier this year.

On the same night as the Icon award, Taylor also won Fashion Vanguard, Video Director of the Year and Best Actress, making her one of the evening’s biggest winners across multiple categories.

The recognition also shows how wide Taylor’s career has really become.

Beyond just music, she has built herself as an actress, a director, and even in creative direction.

Her continued work and success across several entertainment spheres instead of focusing on just one is commendable, and kind of rare.

A softer ending

After the shock of Jackson’s appearance and a speech full of laughter about being “gagged,” Taylor’s acceptance speech took an unexpectedly quiet turn near the end.

She shifted her attention to her two daughters, Junie and Rue, who are 10 and 5-years-old.

She told them: “If one day people remember me as an icon, I pray the two of you always remember me simply as home.”

It was a smaller, more private moment, tucked into a night that was otherwise built around spectacle and surprise.
