In a tense semi-final in Zurich on the night of Wednesday, July 23, Aitana Bonmati was once again the difference maker, with her goal enough to send Spain into the 2025 Women’s Euro final.
Despite Germany having a more tumultuous journey to the semis, they were able to keep the score level well into extra time.
The Germans falter in the final third
“Very few people in Germany thought we would get to the semi-finals, and until the last few minutes, we played so well that Spain could not beat us,” said Germany head coach Christian Wuck.
The Germans had multiple chances to turn their game in their favour, but unsurprisingly, the World Champions were tough to get past.
Wuck also spoke on that, saying: “We need more, better possession; we need more quality. We had chances but didn’t take them, and that is where we need to start so the team can win these sorts of tournaments.”
The lack of finishing edge proved costly, especially against a side as ruthless and composed as Spain.

Bonmati makes history
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati scored the sole goal of the game in the 113th minute, just when it looked like the game would be going to penalties.
“Today I feel we wrote history again. For the first time we were able to make the final of the women’s Euros and beat Germany, which we hadn’t in the past,” said Bonmati.
For Germany, this marks their first loss to Spain in eight competitive meetings, having won four with a clean sheet in each.
On the flip side of the coin, the result has pushed Spain to their first-ever Women’s Euro final.
Familiar territory
Their opponents, England, will be a familiar one.
In their last 10 matches, England have won five, while Spain have won four.
“Today we can enjoy. Tomorrow we have to start thinking of England,” said Bonmati.
This will not be their first time meeting in the final of a major competition.
At the record-breaking 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Spain dominated their way into the final and beat the Lionesses 1-0.
It was a game where England were unable to impress, and this momentum has since carried on for Sarina Wiegman’s side, often struggling in games, winning in the dying embers.

Two reigning champions under the lights
La Roja are more composed, lethal and more comfortably in control of the game’s tempo.
They may not struggle to thrive under England’s chaos.
However, it will be the best of the best going head-to-head.
The best of Liga F vs the best of the WSL, if you will.
A tense match is to be expected, and a highly anticipated one at that.
Will the reigning World Champions reinforce their dominance?
Or will the current European champions find a way to shut them down?
Either way, expect fireworks.
