After months of uncertainty surrounding Marcus Rashford’s career at Manchester United, a season-long loan deal with Barcelona has been secured.

The 27-year-old has joined the Catalan club on a 12-month loan spell, where Barcelona have an option to buy at £30.3million, come the end of the loan spell.

Barcelona will cover the entirety of Rashford’s wages.

The deal is expected to save Manchester United £14-15million over the next 12 months.

He becomes the first English player to sign for Barcelona since Gary Lineker in 1986.

An inevitable move

According to reports, Rashford was one of five players that had informed Manchester United of his desire to leave.

The move feels inevitable, with the forward not having played for his boyhood club since December.

With reports of a strained relationship between Rashford, the club, and Ruben Amorim, the England international was loaned to Aston Villa for the second half of the 2024/25 season.

In 17 games, he scored four goals and provided six assists for Villa.

A fresh start in Spain

A return to Manchester United seemed unlikely.

Should his loan move to Barcelona prove fruitful for both club and player, it could be a move that sticks, or at the very least, one that sees Rashford sign for another club.

Rashford is “eager to learn the Barcelona way” and is “very excited” to be joining the reigning La Liga champions, who enjoyed a cup double last season.

“It’s a club where people’s dreams come true, they win big prizes,” he added.

“What the club stands for means a lot for me.

“I feel like I’m at home and a big factor in my choice to come here is because it is a family place and a good place for good players to showcase their skills.”

He leaves behind a legacy of 138 goals in 426 matches for his boyhood club, having won five major trophies.

He made his senior debut in 2016, and now stands as United’s 15th all-time top scorer.
