AMC Global Media has confirmed the fourth season for Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire (IWTV), and it is also getting a new title: ‘Queen of the Damned.’
The renewal was announced on July 24 during the show’s panel at San Diego Comic Con featuring series executive producers Mark Johnson and Hannah Moscovitch, and cast members Jacob Anderson, Assad Zaman, Eric Bogosian, and Sheila Atim.
It came barely a week after the season three finale on July 19.
Following the decision to rename the third season to ‘The Vampire Lestat’ to align with the title of Rice’s second book in her The Vampire Chronicles (TVC) series, the IWTV team also chose to adopt the third book’s name, ‘Queen of the Damned’ (QOTD).
What to expect
While ‘The Vampire Lestat’ explored Lestat’s (played by Sam Reid) origins and the events that took place before Akasha (Atim) awoke from her statue-like state to rage against man- and vampirekind, ‘Queen of the Damned’ will display the aftermath and how the characters reached the state they were shown in during the opening episode of season three.
Atim will return as Akasha, the mother of all vampires, after delivering a spine-chilling performance in ‘The Vampire Lestat,’ in which her character manically recited a monologue hinting at her future actions.
The teaser trailer released on July 24 – containing stock footage of feminist protests while the Queen’s rant plays in the background – also provided more clues about Akasha’s plans.
However, fans speculate that it might be a distraction from the actual route the story would take.
There are also a few crucial scenes missing from the previous season that fans are hoping to see, including Lestat’s penultimate concert, which is the reason why Akasha rose from her slumber.
Season three showed the preparations for said concert, but the finale – spoiler alert – ended with a scene of Lestat looking over the havoc Akasha wreaked from his Montreal home.
Long-time TVC fans are also looking forward to whether the show would adapt a chapter of the QOTD book that tells the relationship between Daniel Molloy (Bogosian) and The Vampire Armand (Zaman), which has been confirmed romantic during season three.
Reid, Anderson (who plays Louis), Zaman, and Bogosian will, of course, all revive their respective characters for season four.
There are no confirmed dates as to when the new season will air.
However, it was revealed that Moscovitch, in addition to her executive producing, will take the reins from Rolin Jones as showrunner. Jones will remain in the team as an executive producer alongside Johnson, according to Variety.
Moscovitch has been one of the writers for the show since season one. She is responsible for the characters of Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle) and Akasha in ‘The Vampire Lestat.’

Past adaptations
AMC’s ‘Queen of the Damned’ is the second adaptation of Rice’s book, with the first being a 2002 film of the same name directed by Michael Rymer.
The movie stars the late American singer and actress Aaliyah as Akasha and Stuart Townsend as Lestat.
Perhaps the most iconic IWTV adaptation, however, is the 1994 Interview with the Vampire film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as Lestat and Louis, respectively.
The Vampire Chronicles also inspired ‘Lestat’, a 2005 Broadway musical written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, with the book by Linda Woolverton.
