K-pop band BTS released a music video on Wednesday for their new song ‘2.0’, the second single from their new album ‘ARIRANG’.

The South Korean pop group returned to the scene after a four-year hiatus, during which the ARMY (the name used to indicate the band’s fanbase) eagerly awaited their return.

That moment has finally come, with the band releasing two music videos in the span of two weeks.

For the visuals of ‘2.0’, BTS took inspiration from Park Chan-wook’s ‘Oldboy’ (2003), a cult action thriller film that shaped the genre not only in South Korea, but in the rest of the world too.

Not a fight, but dance moves

The videoclip opens with the seven members of BTS – RM, SUGA, V, Jimin, Jung Kook, Jin, and j-hope, as they step out from an elevator and walk into a dark, derelict corridor to meet with a group of thugs.

And while the crowd looks shabby and disheveled, the members of the band look back at them in their dapper outfits, showing off sunglasses, leather jackets, and elegant suits.

A fun touch is added by showing the band members holding some unconventional objects for a fight, with SUGA carrying a bamboo flute and Jung Kook flaunting a traditional fan.

BTS then launch into a choreography, as they perform the song, switching the lead.

The band is then shown continuing with their performance in different environments, from a bathroom to an elevator, and even have time for an intermission to change their outfits before launching into the second part of the tune.

A new sound

‘2.0’ builds into somewhat less-explored musical elements for BTS, with a trap, hip-hop sound that marks a new beginning for the band after their long hiatus.

“It feels like a video that showcases our evolved performance,” the band said.

“As a work paying homage to a film, the filming process was also enjoyable.”

Park Chan-wook is even acknowledged at the end of the music video, with a ‘special thanks’ on the last frame.

“We especially remember dressing up as the ‘old BTS’ in the early part. We couldn’t stop laughing at each other during filming,” the band revealed.
